Just Try and Stop Me: A Slytherdor Essay

At age eleven, wizarding children are sent off to wizarding school to learn wizarding things. If these lucky children are sent to Hogwarts, they are sorted into one of four houses; Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Each of the four houses has their own traits, strengths and of course, weaknesses. Now, imagine a Hogwarts where there are six houses, Slytherdor, Gryffinpuff, Slytherclaw, Ravendor, Slytherpuff and Ravenpuff. Each of these houses would have their own traits, but in such a manner that they overlap with other houses. Slytherdor, perhaps would be what most people would see as the most volatile combination; passionate, ambitious, courageous and cunning.

The Gryffindor house, by itself is represented well in the series, being the house the main character comes from. The sorting hat, as well, sees no reason to contradict the shining view of these people. The times which Gryffindors are mentioned in the sorting song are as follows:

You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;

By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;

Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name."

Gryffindors are, first and foremost, brave. This doesn't have to be bravery of running into a burning building, but can be personal bravery and 'ballsy' as the term has been coined. The second trait listed, chivalry, which dictionary.com says is "The qualities idealized by knighthood, such as bravery, courtesy, honor, and gallantry toward women." Bravery is listed again, as well as honor, courtesy and gallantry toward women. This puts Gryffindors as brave, daring, and chivalrous.

In an application, however (since the reader does not have the benefit of rifling through someone's mind like the sorting hat) bravery is not as easily spotted, nor is chivalry. There are traits that the hat does not mention which people have come to associate with each house. Passion, for one is something that Gryffindors are tagged with. Another, and probably the most negative, is leaping without looking, or at least far more so than many of the other houses. So a Gryffindor is brave, chivalrous, passionate, daring and might not always look where they leap.

Now, Slytherins, who have the worst rap in the series are the other half of Slytherdor. They are often seen in a bad light, not entirely due to the characters that represent the house, but at least partially. The sorting song says this about them:

Or perhaps in Slytherin
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.

And power-hungry Slytherin
loved those of great ambition.

Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry's purest."

From the first song on, Slytherin is mentioned as power-hungry and ambitious. This view of Slytherin is not surprising, as the series is slated from Harry's point of view, and the song reinforces this. However, the song also says 'make your real friends', which does imply that there is more than just using and abusing each other in the Slytherin house. Probably, much more. The two houses which seem to have the most banding together would be Slytherin and Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff rallies under Cedric and Slytherin under Draco. Ambition is mentioned in the second song, and this is usually the defining feature of Slytherins. They don’t just reach to be better, they reach to be the best.

The use of the word 'cunning' has been tripping sorting communities up for a while. Cunning implies one is subtle, in fact subtle is in the dictionary.com definition of the word. However, canonically in the people subtle has never shown up, and subtle is rather hard to put into an application. If it was too subtle, no one would never notice it. So Slytherins are cunning, ambitious and 'use any means to achieve their ends'. They are seen typically as villains, and the 'use any means' part of the song does make them seem a bit amoral. However, Slytherins probably have very strong internal morals, they have their own code of morals to follow and while others might think they are amoral, a Slytherin only bends their own morals, never breaks them.

This all leads to a very confusing point, however, when wanting to talk about Slytherdors. Gryffindor and Slytherin areoften pitted against each other in the Harry Potter books, green-red, good-evil sort of thing. However, if they are two sides of the same coin, there has to be a point in which they merge.

Slytherdors are certainly ballsy, courageous if you will. They are bold and unafraid to speak their mind, or perhaps make an inflammatory comment or two. They carry the Gryffindor boldness rather well, and the courage means that their words are hardly ever empty. Even if they are just spewing hot air, there's probably a fist behind the hot air they could smack you with. Slytherdors have the Slytherin ambition, for sure. They want to be the best, or at least in the select few. Sometimes, because of their Gryffindor side they may just blindside people with their ambitions, but (usually) it isn't intentional.

Of all the hybrid houses, Slytherdor is the house that would stand in front of you, wave an axe and say 'just try and stop me'. Of course, it would also be the house where you would think of them as just being dumb and brave, rush in to crush them and fall into a pit laced with spikes, or something equally unfortunate. At times people may mistake a Slytherdor for someone who wants to be Slytherin, simply because they don't cling to that subtly notion. They are who they are who they are and if you try and tell them otherwise, you're simply below them. They are self-confident, and know where they belong and should be sorted.
